Highgate Cemetery is home to the living as well as the dead.
A rare species of spider, never before found in London, has been discovered living in the vaults of the Egyptian Avenue at the cemetery.
London Wildlife Trust, who discovered the spiders during a bat survey, identified the spider as orb weaver spider ‘Meta bourneti’. This species requires total darkness to survive, and clearly thrives in the sealed vaults.
Highgate Cemetery is one of several built around London in early Victorian times to cope with the severe shortage of burial space and growing population.
